The Problem
The campus library relied on manual check-out logs, barcode scanning that required staff presence, and a basic catalog system with no full-text search. Students couldn't check book availability remotely, overdue reminders were sent manually, and inventory audits took days.
The Approach
Deploying RFID tags on every book for contactless, self-service check-in and check-out — no staff needed. The catalog is powered by Elasticsearch for instant full-text search across titles, authors, subjects, and abstracts. Students check availability from their phones, get automated overdue reminders, and can reserve books. The system tracks real-time inventory and flags misplaced books during automated shelf audits.
How it was built
Audited the existing library workflow — manual logs, barcode limitations, and the lack of remote access for students.
Designed the RFID infrastructure — tag placement, reader positioning at entry/exit gates, and anti-theft detection.
Built the Elasticsearch-powered catalog — full-text search, faceted filtering by subject/author/year, and availability status.
Developed the self-service kiosk interface — tap book on reader, confirm on screen, done. Under 5 seconds per transaction.
Created the student mobile interface — search, reserve, check due dates, and receive overdue notifications.
